What Is a Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a general dental procedure during which a tooth gets pulled from the socket. It’s often performed to remove impacted wisdom teeth or those damaged beyond repair. Most tooth extraction procedures are performed right here in our office.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are various reasons why we recommend tooth extraction at Kenmore Dental, including:

  • Severe decay
  • Bone loss caused by periodontal disease
  • Overcrowding
  • Extreme cracks, breaks, or fractures
  • Impacted or poorly positioned teeth
  • Extra teeth
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out
  • Damaged bone structure caused by infection
  • Preparation for dentures, a bridge, or dental implants

Our team will always attempt to restore a cracked or damaged tooth with a filling, crown, or root canal if it’s possible. However, when the damage is too severe, we must perform a tooth extraction. In these cases, we must remove the affected tooth to secure the health of the gums and surrounding teeth.

How Are Tooth Extractions in Kenmore, WA Performed?

At Kenmore Dental, we will start your appointment with x-rays to diagnose the issue and verify that tooth extraction is the best treatment method. The x-rays also help us determine the best way to remove the tooth.

In most cases, the procedure is done on the same day. However, if your diagnosis is more serious, we may have you schedule an appointment on another day.

We ensure our patients understand the steps involved in the procedure and are comfortable before moving forward. Additionally, we will review instructions for post-treatment care and answer any questions you may have.

We perform tooth extractions under local anesthetics to ensure our patients are comfortable and the procedure is painless. During a non-surgical tooth extraction procedure, we loosen the tooth before using forceps to remove it entirely.

If the tooth breaks under the pressure of the forceps, we may then need to perform a surgical tooth extraction. This process involves cutting through the gums to access the damaged tooth.

Once the procedure is complete, we will apply gauze to the area to help stop the bleeding. If we conduct a surgical extraction, we may need to monitor you for some time as the anesthesia wears off.

What Is Involved in Post-Treatment Care?

After your procedure, you may experience mild bleeding for up to 12 hours. Gently biting down on gauze will encourage a blood clot to form and help stop the bleeding. If you experience considerable bleeding or bleeding that lasts more than 12 hours, call us immediately at 425-485-0588

In addition to bleeding, you may also experience mild to moderate discomfort, soreness, and oozing of pink fluids. Recovery will take anywhere from a few days to a week.

During this time, you should perform the following post-care treatments:

  • Take painkillers as prescribed
  • Apply ice
  • Avoid rinsing
  • Eat soft foods
  • Don’t use straws
  • After 24-hours, rinse with warm water and salt
  • Don’t brush or floss the area
