Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing is blocked while you sleep. This can disrupt your sleep patterns, of course, but can also put you at risk for extremely serious health problems. Thus, though it is common, sleep apnea is a serious threat to your health that needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.

There are two kinds of sleep apnea. One kind deals with the signals your brain sends your body while you sleep. The second kind, obstructive sleep apnea, is much more common, and is when something is physically obstructing airflow. Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, is what we can address here. Sleep apnea can be caused by genetic predispositions, environmental factors, or a combination of both. Even weather could play a role in obstructive sleep apnea, particularly if you are suffering from sinus congestion or allergies.

Genetic predispositions that affect whether you have sleep apnea include:

–undersized jaw

–oversized tonsils

–deviated septum

–oversized tongue

–gender: males are more at risk than females

–age: individuals over 40 are more at risk.

If you do have OSA, there are treatment options. These options may include such things as oral appliance therapy, Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) therapy treatments, or surgery. Consulting with your doctor will help determine if you have sleep apnea, and potential treatments that best fit your needs.
