If you enjoy road trips or are planning a weekend getaway, don’t forget to pack your toothbrush and toothpaste. But if you get to your destination and realize that you forgot one or the other, don’t panic. There are some things you can do, even if you can’t get to a convenience or drug store, or grocery store.
It is a good idea to keep an extra toothbrush, a travel toothbrush or some disposable toothbrushes in your luggage or travel kit. If none of those are available, you can use a little toothpaste on your finger to scrub your teeth. If you find yourself without toothpaste, you can brush without it with just a damp toothbrush. You can also use soap, which was an ingredient in toothpaste for years, or castile soap, which contains peppermint oil. If need be use baking soda, or even salt.
These are of course back up measures and as soon as possible, you should brush your teeth using a toothbrush and toothpaste containing fluoride. If you have been on the road for a while without your toothbrush and/or toothpaste, you can always make an appointment to see your dentist when you get home. In the meantime, do the best you can with what you have, watch your sugar, starch and acid intake, and drink fluoridated tap water when possible.
